THE SAIL LOFT CLOTHING COMPANY

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

SHOP

THE SAIL LOFT
CLOTHING COMPANY

The Sail Loft Clothing Company derives it’s name from the original use of the building that houses them. Constructed in the late 1700’s, the building was used to make and repair sails for large commercial sailing ships. The building and the others lining Bowen’s Wharf were all meticulously refurbished in the early 1980’s, when they re-opened as Sail Loft Clothing Company. “The original 15” pine floors, oak beams and large fireplace make a perfect setting for our Robert Graham shop” says the Sail Loft’s owner Michael Evangelisti.

EAT

CASTLE HILL INN

“Whenever I’m asked for a restaurant recommendation, my response is always the same, Castle Hill Inn. Built in the late 1800’s where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, both the Inn and the setting are magical. With the dining room overlooking the water, and large sweeping lawns that descend into the sea, its “formal-informality” makes it a highlight of any visit to Newport.” - Michael Evangelisti

MEET

TODD KOZIKOWSKI

“Where else can you find Robert Graham on a pier just after you arrive on a sailboat? Mike Evangelisti and team at The Sail Loft Clothing company have a wonderful ability to match my personality to the festive colors, floral patterns, and contrasting cuffs of Robert Graham. A win for any visitor by land or sea.” - Todd Kozikowski

RESPECT

HISTORY

When asked what his favorite thing about Newport is, Evangelisti replys “It’s the abundance of history, and the immense respect shown for that history by the residents of Newport, locals like to say that if someone from 1800 returned to the city, they would have a fairly easy time of finding their way around , they would find many of the same furnishings, art, and even restaurants that they previously enjoyed.”

LEARN

THE SUMMER WHITE HOUSE

Among the many interesting people that have called Newport home is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She grew up in Newport on Hammersmith Farm, located on the beautiful Ocean Drive and was married to President Kennedy there on September 12, 1953. It became known as ‘The Summer White House’ during Kennedy’s presidency and remained in the Auchincloss family until the late 1970’s.

VISIT

TOURO SYNAGOGUE

“While Newport is well known for it’s sailing, beautiful mansions, and Tennis Hall of Fame, I always suggest that visitors include The Touro Synagogue in their trip” suggests Evangelisti. “Constructed in 1763, It is the America’s oldest synagogue and is a testament to our religious freedom. After our war of Independence, George Washington traveled here from Philadelphia to delivered an address to the congregation, pledging his commitment of continued religious freedom in our new country. To me, it is a symbol of all that is great with America.”
